Kitchen Garden Manager

Position Summary:

Set amid the hills and vineyards of Sonoma County, Enso Village is a collaboration between the San Francisco Zen Center, a landmark of American Zen practice, and the Kendal Corporation, a visionary provider of retirement community services founded on Quaker principles. We are opening our doors to the community in October 2023! We are looking for an experienced Kitchen Garden Manager to design and manage our gardens onsite in Healdsburg, CA.

Position Duties:

  • Executes gardening designs for the Enso Village property; implements seasonal planting, harvesting, and landscape management of the kitchen garden.    
  • Works creatively to beautify the property, common areas and gardens for the community.  Plants vegetables, fruit trees, herbs, succulent and low-water vegetation and foliage; locally sources trees, and plants
  • Manages plantings based upon sustainability and low-water usage, organic, non- and low-toxic pest management.
  • Develops planting/care budget; may oversee landscaping contractors.
  • Works with culinary leader to understand seasonal/daily menus, ensuring adequate quantity of vegetables and herbs.
  • May provide occasional lectures on various horticultural topics, for example native species and their management.

Position Requirements:

  • Certification as a Horticulturist or Master Gardener; a combination of experience, practical training may substitute.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience overseeing the planting, production, and maintenance of a kitchen garden or its equivalent.
  • Prior experience compiling a budget, including purchase of trees, plants and seeds, gardening tools, non-toxic pesticides, etc. Comprehensive understanding of sustainable gardening, including low-water, low-toxicity and low waste principles.
  • Working knowledge of irrigation installation and repair, plant propagation, soil amending, composting.
  • Knowledge of state and local regulatory requirements relevant to Sonoma County hardiness zone, OSHA safety standards, hazards, fire and other emergency protocols.

Creative Arts Therapist

Position Summary:

You provide structured and unstructured ways to engage in creative practice for residents of Enso Village. You facilitate groups with subjects ranging from recreation to therapeutic processing. You collaborate with other Enso Village departments such as dining and spiritual care to provide multidisciplinary experiences. You collaborate with outside organizations to enable trips, classes, performances, and other enrichment opportunities. You listen to the interests of residents in creating scheduled groups, opportunities for independent enrichment, and large group events. You assist in creating and maintaining the environments and materials of the maker spaces and music space.  You understand our focus on sustainable efforts and assist with sourcing materials and establishing practices based in sustainability. You are focused on continuous improvement and actively participate in ongoing program evaluation and collaborative development in the Inspirement department.

Position Duties:

  • Provides creative arts therapy to residents.
  • Contributes to cost-effective management of Inspirement budget with a focus on sustainability.
  • Participates in development of and continued use of Digital Resident Engagement Platform.
  • Partners with Facilities, Kitchen Garden Manager, Dining, and Inspirement team in the use of the garden spaces.
  • Maintains a safe work environment in compliance with ethical codes of creative arts therapies disciplines.
  • Nurtures relationships with outside providers, making contacts, coordinating events, and evaluating offerings on an ongoing basis.

Position Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in creative arts therapy (Art, Creative Arts, Dance, Drama, Music).
  • Minimum of 1 year of post-master’s degree experience required. Board certification in creative arts therapy discipline of focus strongly preferred. Seeking someone with multiple interests and certifications.
  • A commensurate combination of experience in creative work with older adults pre-graduation may be considered.
  • Familiarity with adaptive approaches to creative practice with older adults. Experience working with people with different abilities and adaptive needs, including working with people with diseases of later life like dementia and Parkinson’s.
  • Must be able to learn and utilize new technologies, including knowledge of Microsoft office, power point presentation systems.

Spiritual Life & Zendo Coordinator

Position Summary:

You will collaborate closely with Head of Spiritual Life and retired Zen priests in residence at Enso Village to create a Zendo and Dokusan experience that is authentic and welcoming.  You will help organize and maintain a Zendo schedule that includes traditional Soto Zen ceremonies, retreats, and meditation periods as well as other spiritual events, gatherings, classes, and talks from various resident-led spiritual groups on the Enso campus. You will coordinate volunteer activities with residents to lead communal, mindful upkeep of the Zendo and grounds.

Position Duties:

  • Works with Head of Spiritual Life and resident Zen teachers to facilitate Zen forms and Zen ceremonies such as Full Moon ceremonies, regular sitting meditation, oryoki, and sesshin.
  • Prepares Zendo and Dokusan space by identifying/procuring ritual implements needed, creating appropriate seating arrangements; and modeling Zendo/Dokusan etiquette.
  • Helps organize dharma talks by identifying and inviting possible teachers, scheduling and sharing the program dates, communicating with the teacher about any needs, and preparing the Zendo space;
  • Trains residents and Enso team members who are curious about Zen forms and would like to participate in either formal and informal Zen offerings (e.g., trainings on zazen, dokusan, how to set up the Zendo, the meaning of ritual forms, how to use instruments, etc.).
  • Serves as a point of connection for retired Zen teachers in residence, spending time hearing and effectuating their ritual/practice needs.
  • Maintains and communicates a schedule of all Zendo activities. Ensures that a schedule of Zendo activities is up-to-date and well-communicated to residents and Enso Team members.
  • Ensures that the Zendo use is made available for all interested residents and that open/unscheduled time for quiet reflection in the Zendo is also honored. Coordinates with groups using the Zendo in advance about any needs and appropriately shares guidance about Zendo etiquette.
  • Welcomes and orients individuals and groups to the Zendo for planned activities.  Cares for Zendo between events and tracks Zendo needs.
  • Ensures that the Zendo is properly maintained and cared for, that supply needs are monitored, and that flower arrangements/altars/seating arrangements are refreshed and recalibrated as needed.
  • Works with Head of Spiritual Life to track Zendo expenditures and manage Zendo budget.
  • Creates practice opportunities by training all interested residents in how to clean and care for the altar, make flower arrangements, and otherwise maintain the Zendo space.
  • Participates in the organization and facilitation of Spiritual Life initiatives and activities. Receives training in (and assists in the delivery of) Mindful Community Training, a unique, experiential curriculum that will be delivered to all new team members and made available to residents.
  • Provides valuable input on how to honor a diverse community with many beliefs, faiths, values, and convictions.
  • Facilitates opportunities for spiritual discovery on and off the Enso campus.
  • Collaborates with residents and other Enso team members as appropriate.
  • Coordinates volunteers; helps design community volunteerism programs to provide residents with various opportunities for the practice of giving.
  • Organizes volunteer duties to ensure care and maintenance of Zendo, Dokuson room, and grounds, and provides context to volunteers regarding the relationship of these tasks to spiritual practice.

Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Theology, Psychology, Religious Studies or related field is preferred.
  • A minimum of 10 years’ experience in (or exposure to) Zen spiritual practice, with residential training preferred.
  • Fluency and significant training in Zen practices, forms, rituals, and teachings; experience working with and/or leading volunteers; familiarity with various spiritual communities; and experience honoring and living out the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and accessibility (DEIBA).
  • Ability to be on-site regularly in Healdsburg, CA.
